Rocklin HYPE 12U wins the NSA Youth Western World Series!!!!!!!!!

The Rocklin Hype, a 12U girls fast pitch softball team, won the 2008 N.S.A. Western World Series as the squad went undefeated in Nevada last week.

“This has been three years in the making,” Hype coach Mike Mello said. “With our core group of six girls staying together (Megan Mello, Alanna Rainer, Kayli Shaw, Autumn Powell, Keri McClintock, Ashley Sutter) and the addition of six new players (Abby Lund, Kaylee Avilla, Kaylin Mallery, Shelby Taylor, Kylee Barnes, Brynnley Eli-Tomkins) I knew we had something special.”

Cali Lewis and Kendall Chambers also played for the Hype.

The Hype won the title by beating the East Bay Vipers 11-1 in the championship game of the tournament that was played in Carson City.

Mello pitched for Rocklin and allowed just two hits in that game. Mallery scored three runs while Rainer and Lewis scored twice each.

Rocklin hammered the Elko Inferno (6-1) and the Galt Illusion (7-0) in pool play. Shaw had a double and two RBI against Elko while Sutter was dominant on the rubber against Galt.

Rocklin then crushed Nevada Line Drive 13-4 as Mello, Barnes and Lewis each pitched. Taylor had a double and two RBI while Lund was 2-for-3 with two runs. The Hype also topped the So Cal PYL Fierce 6-2 as Sutter threw just 50 pitches in five innings. McClintock hit a grand slam to seal the victory.

Powell (2-2, double) helped the Hype top the So Cal Westside Pride 4-0 and Rocklin then beat the previously undefeated East Bay Vipers 13-4 to gain a big advantage in the double-elimination tournament. Rainer, the catcher, doubled and drove in two runs while McClintock had a two-run homer in the fourth inning.

The Rocklin Hype won the 2008 National Softball Association Western World Series title in Carson City, Nev. Rocklin defeated the East Bay Vipers 11-2 in the under-12 girls final. The Hype (7-0) outscored its tournament opponents 60-13.

Rocklin HYPE 12U takes second in state tourney

The Rocklin Hype’s 12U girls fast pitch softball team placed second in the Northern California NSA State Championships over the weekend at Rainbow Fields in Modesto.


The Hype, who went 6-2, had to fight out of the loser’s bracket to earn the runner-up position. They played eight games in a just 40 hours and outscored their opponents 59-24. 


Rocklin topped the Valley Heat 9-1 in the opener Friday before losing to the Nor Cal Cruisers 5-4 Saturday to enter the loser’s bracket. Rocklin then won five consecutive games before losing to the East Bay Vipers 6-5 in Sunday’s championship game.


Rocklin’s team is consisted of Abby Lund, Alanna Rainer, Ashley Sutter, Autumn Powell, Brynley Tompkins, Cali Lewis, Kayli Shaw, Kaylee Avila, Kaylin Mallery, Keri McClintock, Kylee Barnes, Kendall Chambers and Megan Mello.

Sutter pitched the first game against the Valley Heat and allowed just one hit. She and Barnes both went 2-for-3 with two RBIs as well. Mello, Shaw, McClintock and Powell led Rocklin’s offense throughout Saturday’s games.


Rocklin beat the Cruisers 4-2 in its first game Sunday to reach the semifinals. Lund went 2-2 with four RBI while Rainer was 2-2 and scored twice.


The Hype then topped the RR Gold 10-5 later in the day to reach the championship game as Chambers and Sutter were solid from the circle. Tompkins went 2-2 with two RBI.


The Vipers scored five runs in the last of the sixth inning to top the Hype in the championship game.

The Hype will head to Reno and Carson City Sunday to play in the NSA Western World Series National Tournament.
